Combine sugar through corn syrup in heavy pan. Bring to boil stirring constantly. Turn to high-medium heat and continue to cook to softball stage. About 30-35 minutes. Take off heat and add vanilla; stir. Pour into buttered pan. Add chopped nuts if desired.
