In a mixing bowl, sift flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Blend well, then cut in shortening and butter using a pastry cutter, until pea sized.
Add buttermilk and using a large cooking spoon stir just enough to blend the buttermilk into the flour mixture.
Sprinkle the work surface with flour and turn the dough out. Knead just until the dough comes together.
Break the dough into 8 equal portions and Pat approximately 1/2 inch thick onto a baking sheet. The biscuits should be irregular in shape, but no more than 1/2 inch high and 1 inch apart. Bake until golden brown, approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from oven and brush with melted butter.
