Just like my mom made when I was little.
Add the bread crumbs to the scalded milk and allow them to soak until soft.
Cut the chocolate into pieces, add the boiling water, and cook gently until a smooth paste is formed.
Add this to the bread mixture and add the remaining ingredients.
Pour the batter into a buttered baking dish, and place the dish into a pan of hot water.
Bake the pudding slowly at 350° until it becomes firm, about 1 hour.
Cover during the first 15 minutes of cooking.
Check doneness by inserting a knife in the middle, if done it will come out clean.
Hard Sauce:
Cream butter until very light.
Add sugar very slowly, beating until light and creamy.
Add vanilla and beat again.
Chill and serve over hot puddings.
