In a separate bowl, combine the sugar, cornstarch, salt, cocoa and milk. Mix well. Pour, stirring constantly, into the hot milk mixture; blend thoroughly. Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and boils. Cool slightly; add vanilla. Chill and serve with whipped cream. I first encountered this recipe in my junior high home economics class.
