My German mother-in-law used to make these all the time, from a recipe handed down through her family. They are amazing!
Prepare the nut filling:
In a bowl mix nuts, sugar and cinnamon. Fold into egg whites. Set aside.
In a large bowl mix flour, salt and yeast. Cut in butter as for pie crust. Add egg yolks, sour cream, 1 t. vanilla and lemon rind. Divide into 6 balls. Roll each on board covered with powdered sugar into a roughly 9" circle. Cut into 8 wedges. Put 1T. nut filling on each wedge. Roll up into crescent shapes. TIP: Start at widest part of the wedge.
Bake on a greased cookie sheet for 10-12 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Frost while warm with powdered sugar frosting, or frosting of your choice.
Store in an airtight container.
