A fairly sturdy sugar cookie (we used them for the stars for our cookie trees)
In a bowl, combine sugar and butter; beat until creamy. Add eggs and vanilla; beat well. Stir together dry ingredients; gradually add to creamed mixture until completely blended. Chill for 30 minutes (or longer).
Preheat oven to 350. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to a 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with holiday cutters dipped in flour. Using a floured spatula, transfer cookies to ungreased (or parchment paper-lined) baking sheets. Bake 10-12 minutes. Cool on wire racks.
This amount of dough made 36 star shapes for the "Festivitrees" trees (6 of each size from smallest to largest). There was enough dough left for about 15 other sugar cookies. Be sure to work with only a small amount of dough at a time, leaving the rest in the refrigerator to stay cold until it is needed. In general, handle the dough as little as possible.
We decorated with Betty Crocker "cookie icing" (it took almost a whole tube to adequately decorate a tree made with two cookies of each size). We also used some canned frosting dispensed from the Pampered Chef "Easy Accent Decorator." That worked well, too. The "Writing Gels" turned out to be a little sticky because they don't dry like the regular icing. We didn't like the effect of the writing "brushes" that we had.
