Cook onion in oil until tender but not brown. Stir in flour, salt, and cayenne. Add half and half and cook, stirring constantly, until thickened. Remove from heat. Stir in salad dressing. Fold in crabmeat.
Arrange asparagus in heatproof platter or shallow baking dish. Spoon crab mixture over asparagus and sprinkle with cheese. Broil about 4 inches from heat for 3-5 minutes, or until lightly browned and hot.
