Suggest a better descriptionCut apples into quarters; remove stems & blossom ends. Slice each quarter into 4 or 5 slices. Place apples in a Dutch oven or large heavy-bottomed pot. Stir in cranberries, cider, and orange peel. Bring to boil over high heat. Reduce heat; cover and boil gently for about 15 minutes or until apples are very soft.
Ladle fruit and liquid into a mesh strainer and press pulp through; discard peel & seeds. Or extract pulp using a food mill. Return to the clean Dutch oven.
Stir in sugar and nutmeg; cook over low heat, stirring constantly until sugar is dissolved. Increase heat; bring to boil, stirring constantly. Reduce heat; boil gently, uncovered, for 20 to 25 minutes or until thickened. Continue to reduce heat and stir often, especially toward end of cooking time. Test for doneness.
Ladle into sterilized jars to within 1/4 inch of rim; wipe rims. Apply prepared lids and rings; tighten just until fingertip tight.
Process jars in boiling water canner for 10 minutes.
Let rest at room temperature until cool. Check seals; refrigerate any unsealed jars for up to 3 weeks.
(You may use frozen cranberries in this recipe, if desired. Measure in a semi-thawed state while they still hold their shape. If thawed, they will squish down and you will have too much.)
