In a saucepan, boil water and sugar until dissolved.
Add cranberries, return to a boil, lower heat and simmer for 10 minutes until cranberries burst.
Add optional ingredients -- 1/2 cup chopped pecans, 1 cup raisin, pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg
Cool completely at room temperature and then chill in refrigerator.
