Preheat Oven to 375 degrees.
Grease a 13 X 9 baking dish with butter.
In a large saucepan cook onions until clear. Add soup and cubed cream cheese. Stir until smooth and hot.
In the baking dish, alternate layers of hash browns and soup mixture, begining and ending with hash browns.
Bake for 60 minutes.
Remove from oven and sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top and retrun to the oven for 5 to 7 minutes.
Remove from oven and enjoy.
