Mix shortening and sugar thoroughly. Stir in egg, milk and vanilla. Finally add flour and mix well. Chill until firm (at least one hour).
Roll dough 1/8" thick on floured board. Cut with cookie cutter. Place on greased baking sheets and bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Frost when cool.
For frosting: Mix butter and sugar. Add milk, a little at a time, until frosting is thin enough to spread easily. Add a few grains of salt and vanilla. Color with food coloring if desired.
