1. Sift dry ingredients into bowl; cut in butter and shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs, stir in egg and vanilla.
2. Shape soft dough into 1 inch balls; roll in sugar and place 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheet.
3. Flatten to 1/2 inch thick with the bottom of a glass dipped in sugar.
4. Bake at 350 for 12 minutes.
