Add nuts and cool.
Cream shortening or butter and sugar.
Beat eggs and add.
Add vanilla.
Blend dry ingredients and add.
Divide dough into 2 parts.
Chill thoroughly.
Roll each out into 10" x 12" rectangle, 1/4" thick.
Spread each rectangle with date filling.
Roll as a jelly roll along 12" side.
Wrap in wax paper and chill overnight.
Cut into 1/4" slices.
Bake at 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes.
