I added dried cranberries to give these cookies some zing.
In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugars together. Add eggs and vanilla. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt and soda. Add the dry mixture to the creamed mixture a little at a time. Mix in oatmeal until combined, then add the cranberries, stirring only until combined.
Drop by tablespoonful on a greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for approx. 12 minutes, or until lightly brown. Cool on a rack.
Notes: This recipe came to me third-hand - my mom received it from her Brenham friend Cindy Williams, and Cindy got it from her aunt, Dee Rhoden of Abilene. The original recipe called for 1 cup of pecans instead of the cranberries - you can do it however you like it, and could also substitute raisins. If you use salted butter, cut the recipe salt in half.
