2. Butter two eight inch round cake pans and line with parchment paper
3. Butter parchment and dust pans with cocoa
4. In medium bowl,, whisk together one cup cocoa powder and boiling water, until smooth
5. In separate bowl whisk together flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda
6. In a large mixing bowl, beat butter and 2 1/4 cups sugar until fluffy and pale yellow
7. Add whole eggs, one at a time, beating one minute after each addition
8. With mixer on low, add flour mixture in three aditions, alternating with two additions of cocoa mixture
9. Beat until combined
10. Fold in four teaspoons vanilla
11. Divide batter between pans
12. Bake until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean (45-50 minutes); rotate pans half way through
13. Remove pans from oven, transfer to wire racks and let cool completely
14. Remove cakes from pans and discard parchment
15. Trim cakes if desired
16. In a heat proof bowl set over a pan of simmering water, whisk together remaining 1 1/2 cups sugar, egg whites and corn syrup until sugar is dissolved
17. Remove heat
18. Using mixer, beat on high until stiff, fluffy peaks form (about five minutes)
19. Fold in remaining one teaspoon vanilla
20. Transfer a cake to serving plate and top with one cup of frosting
21. Stack second cake on top and cover top and sides with remaining frosting
