2. Rub in shortening with fork
3. Beat egg with milk; add to flour mixture
4. Drop from tip of spoon into boiling, salted water or on top of meat stew or fricassee. Cover tightly and cook without rising the cover
5. There must be plenty of gravy around the stew to cook dumplings successfully
For the Inquiring cook
1. If preferred the dough may be dropped on a greased perforated pie plate in a steamer. Cover and steam 15-20 minutes
2. At serving time arrange dumplings around edge of platter or bowl in which stew or fricassee is served
