Suggest a better descriptionIn bowl combine water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 3-5 minutes. Mix in salt, oil and 3 cups flour. Add more flour (2 1/2 to 3 cups) until dough clears the sides of the bowl. Turn onto floured surface and knead 2-3 minutes until smooth. Transfer to lightly greased bowl; cover and let rise until double. Divide dough in half; pat each into a thick rectangle (9x13) and roll up; pinch ends. Place seam side down on pan. Cover until double. Use a sharp knife to cut slashes in loaves. Heat oven to 375°. After placing loaves in oven, immediately add a pan of ice cubes (5-6 cubes) on rack below baking sheet. Bake 25 - 30 minutes; coat with butter.
