Quarter dates and mix with fruits, nuts, molasses and rum. Let sit overnight.
Cream butter, add sugar gradually, then beat in eggs, one at a time, beating each in very thoroughly. Transfer to large mixing bowl and add fruits, then sifted dry ingredients.
Mix all together thoroughly.
Bake in 2 medium loaf pans (8" x 4" x 3") or 1 1/2 quart casseroles or 3 6 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 2" loaf pans, greased and lined with greased paper.\
Bake in slow oven (275 degrees F.) about 2 hours (less for smaller pans) with pan of water on bottom shelf of oven. Remove from pans to cool, but leave paper on cakes.
Pour rum over top of cakes to soak in, or inject into cakes, to suit individual tastes.
