Combine all cocktail ingredients in a cocktail mixing glass, but don't add ice yet.
Light the candle. Grasping a wood chip with small tongs or tweezers, hold it just above the candles's flame until it begins smoking (if it ignites, gently blow it out so that it smolders). Hold a medium serving glass upside-down over the smoke to capture it.
Set the smoked glass onto your work surface, and add ice to the cocktail mixing glass. Stir until chilled and diluted, then strain into the smoked glass.
Note: Suitable wood chips for this are often sold for use in small smoker boxes for bbq grills: avoid wood that's been treated with paint or sealants. We prefer applewood chips, though other fruit or hard woods work just as well.
Substituting Macallan Scotch with 10+ year aged bourbon.
