Place butter in a 4 quart microwave casserole dish; cook on HIGH for 2 minutes or until melted. Add onions and sugar; stir to coat. Cover dish with plastic wrap or vented lid and cook on HIGH for 12 to 15 minutes or until onions are soft, stirring every 4 minutes.
Sprinkle flour over onions and stir to blend. Add beef stock, wine and pepper. Recover and cook on HIGH 10 to 12 mintues, stirring halfway through.
Divide soup between six bowls. Place a slice of bread on top of each bowl and sprinkle each slice with cheese. Place bowls in circular pattern in microwave and cook, uncovered, 6 to 8 minutes or until cheese melts. If necessary, reposition bowls halfways through cooking time.
