Break egg into bowl. Measure milk, sugar, salt and vanilla into bowl. Beat with egg beater, or whisk until yolk and white are blended but not too frothy. Place frying pan on medium heat. Add butter to cover bottom of pan until melted, usually 2 tablespoons are enough. Dip pieces of bread, using tongs or fork, into egg mixture. Place in skillet. Fry bread until golden brown on one side. Turn with spatula and fry on other side. Add more butter as needed. Serve with jam, jelly, or syrup.
