Suggest a better descriptionIn a large, heavy pot or Dutch oven, combine the beans and enough cold water to cover by about an inch. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, cover, reduce the heat to low, and simmer for about 2 hours, until the beans are tender and most of the liquid is absorbed.
Replenish water as necessary.
Meanwhile, in a large skillet over medium-high heat, sauté the bacon until crisp. Remove the bacon and sauté the onion in the grease until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the tomato sauce, chile powder, and salt. Return the bacon to the mixture.
When the beans are tender, add the tomato sauce mixture and a little water to loosen (between 1/4 and 1/2 cup) and simmer for 20 minutes.
