Suggest a better descriptionPreheat oven to 350 degrees F
Mix thoroughly butter, sugar, vanilla and a few drops of food coloring. Work in flour and salt until dough holds together. If dough is dry, add 1 to 2 tablespoons light cream.
Mold dough by tablespoons around date, nut, cherry or few chocolate pieces. Place cookies about 1-inch apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until set but not brown.
Icing
Mix 1 cup confectioners sugar, 2 1/2 tablespoons light cream or 1 1/2 tablespoons milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla until smooth. Food coloring if desired.
For chocolate icing, increase light cream to 3 tablespoons or milk to 2 tablespoons and stir in 1 ounce melted unsweetened chocolate.
Additions
Dates, nuts, semisweet chocolate pieces, candied or maraschino cherries.
