These spicy, nickel sized little cookies are very addicting. One handful is never enough. They are a bit like gingerbread. Don't let the unusual ingredients (including pepper) scare you off - they are worth a try.
Mix shortening, sugars, and eggs well. Add coffee and anise extract. Then add the dry ingredients. Add enough additional flour to make a stiff dough mixing with your hands. The dough has to be rather stiff.
Roll into 3/4 inch rolls - like fat pencils.
Put on a tray separating layers of rolls with wax paper. Freeze.
Cut into 1/4 inch thick slices and bake at 350? for about 12 minutes.
Store in an airtight container.
This is a recipe I got from my grandmother that has been in the family for many years. They are very good, and very addicting. All of the ingredients are a must, don't skip any of them, especially the anise extract and pepper. These are a nice change from the traditional Christmas cookie.
