In a large mixer bowl, pour boiling water over shortening. With mixer at medium speed, beat until well mixed. Add egg, brown sugar and molasses and beat until well blended.
In a medium bowl, combine remaining ingredients. Gradually add dry ingredients to molasses mixture and beat just until blended.
Wrap and chill dough at least 2 hours.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease 2 large cookie sheets. On a lightly floured board, roll out chilled dough 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Cut out dough with gingerbread man cookie cutter. Using spatula or small knife, carefully transfer to prepared cookie sheet. Bake 5-8 minutes. Cool on wire racks. Decorate.
