I first had this at Chicago's Christkindlmarket and have decided to make it an annual winter tradition. The perfect drink to warm you up on those bitter cold winter days.
- In a medium size saucepan, combine the water, sugar, cinnamon and cloves. Bring to a boil while stirring constantly, then reduce heat and continue to simmer.
- Cut the orange in half and squeeze the juice into the pot. Once the juice has been squeezed, scrape out the insides from the peel and cut off the core ends. Place the orange peel into the mixture. You can cut it into pieces so it will all fit. Cook until the mixture starts to thicken like syrup. This will take a while.
- Pour in the wine and rum and stir, heating gradually until steaming. **DO NOT BOIL.**
- Strain the mixture and serve in mugs.
You can store any extra in a glass bottle in the fridge. Reheat before serving. Again, do not boil!
