PREHEAT OVEN TO 350 DEGREES. GREASE AND FLOUR (OR USE BAKING SPRAY) A 13 X 9 CAKE PAN.
In bowl number 1, cream together the sugar, Crisco and eggs. Mix well.
In bowl number 2, sift together the flour, baking soda, cocoa, and salt. Add these dry ingredients to the creamed ingredients. Set aside.
In a small bowl, make sour milk by stirring the milk and lemon juice / vinegar together. Let this sit for a few minutes, then add to the wet / dry combination. Also add the vanilla and boiling water. Mix this all together very well.
Pour into your prepared pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30 - 35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Heat the corn syrup to boiling. Boil for 1 minute and cool for a bit. Beat the egg whites until stiff. Add the cooled boiled syrup to the egg whites, and beat until stiff. Add a pinch of salt and fold in the vanilla. (CAN CUT THIS RECIPE IN HALF FOR A SHEET CAKE)
