Cook grated onion and butter in a skillet for 1 minute. Add flour, salt, sugar and pepper. Stir to combine. Add milk and stir until thick and bubbly. Remove from heat. Stir in sour cream and green beans.
In a 1 quart greased casserole dish, alternate green bean mixture and swiss cheese with green beans being on top.
Melt butter. Stir in corn flakes or other cereal. If using canned fried onions, omit the melted butter. Sprinkle on top of the green bean casserole.
Cook at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.
