This is the way my mom and grandmother made green beans. You can use home canned or store bought green beans.
In a 3qt. sauce pan on medium-high heat, add the chopped bacon. Cook until bacon is light brown but not crisp.
Add the green beans, salt, pepper, and sugar; mix well.
Sprinkle the onion over the beans. Cover and turn heat down to low, simmer for 45 minutes.
