Mash bread and milk in a large bowl with a fork until homogeneous. Stir in salt, pepper, garlic, and steak sauce.
Add hamburger and mix until combined. Don't overmix.
Divide meat into 4 portions and form it into a ball. Flatten ball into 3/4 inch thick patties.
Grill on medium-hot heat for 2-4 minutes. Flip burger. Grill for 3 minutes for medium-well and 4 minutes for well-done.
If adding cheese, add cheese slices 2 minutes before desired doneness. Cover the burger to melt cheese.
While burger is grilling, warm/grill the buns.
