Mix hot water (hottest you can get out of the tap) with white sugar, stir then add yeast and stir. Set aside and allow yeast to bubble
Melt butter and shortening in a bowl in the microwave then add to yeast mixture
Add powdered milk and salt to mixture, don't stir
Wait about 10 minutes then add flour to mixture and begin to mix. If you are using a mixer on a stand then add flour until dough just cleans the sides of the bowl. Too much flour makes for dense rolls. Allow to mix for 5 minutes.
Dump out on a greased counter top and knead with your hands for 1 minute
Roll out dough into a large rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick
Melt 1/8 pound butter and spread evenly over dough
Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, brown sugar, and walnuts
Roll dough from the side, cut with dental floss into 1/2 inch thick slices and place on greased pan
Allow to rise double, place in oven pre-heated to 350 and cook for 20 minutes
Frosting: Mix 6 T butter, milk, vanilla, and powdered sugar (add sugar until desired consistency), frost the rolls while still warm.
