1. Crumble sausage into large skillet (if sausage comes in casing, remove from casing, discard casing and crumble). Add onions and garlic and saute until sausage is browned. Drain off fat. Set aside and allow to cool.
2. In a large bowl, combine 1/2 cup all purpose flour, whole wheat flour, cornmeal, sugar, salt and yeast. Stir in water and butter-mix well. Stir in remaining 1 cup of flour to form a soft dough. Cover with towel and let rest 10 minutes.
3. Grease a 9 or 10 inch spring form pan. Stir down dough. With buttered fingers, press about 2/3 of dough into bottom of pan. Add cheese, and tomatoes to sausage mixture. Spoon into center of dough. With spoon, spread and press filling toward the edge of the pan, leaving 1/2 inch rim of dough at sides. Drop remaining dough onto filling and with buttered fingers spread gently over top. Top will be rough. Cover loosely with towel and let rise in warm place away from drafts for until dough is doubled, about 30 minutes.
4. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Brush top of dough with beaten egg. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake loaf for 25-35 minutes or until loaf is nicley browned and pulls away from sides of pan. Cool 5 minutes. Loosen loaf with a knife. Remove side of pan. Cut into wedges.
We like to serve with a pizza sauce (1- 14 oz can tomato sauce heated with 1 tsp. each of dried basil and oregano, galic to taste, and 1 tblspoon of tomato paste).
