Heat a deep pot and add oil and butter. Add chopped vegetables and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Add bay leaves and flour and cook for 2 minutes, again stirring. Stir in broth and milk and bring soup up to a bubble. Add crab meat and corn and cook another five minutes. Remove bay leaves and add salt and pepper to taste.
