Grease and flour 2 nine inch layer pans. Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs. Sift together flour, soda and salt.Stir in milk and vanilla. Fold in nuts. Pour in baking pans and bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes.
Icing:( Heat butter and cream together.) Meanwhile carmelize 2 Tbls sugar and scalded cream and butter until lumps are dissolved. Stir in 3 cups confectioners sugar. Beat until icing is smooth and easy to spread. Add more cream to thin icing.
