Similar to stuffed pepper but assembled differently

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Place peppers on a large baking dish and bake until tender, about 20 minutes.
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat oil. Add onions and mushrooms, season with salt and pepper. Cook until soft, about 6 minutes. Add steak and season with more salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, about 3 minutes. Stir in Italian seasonings.
Place one piece of provolone at the bottom of each baked pepper half. Add steak mixture and top with another piece of provolone.
Broil until golden, about 3 minutes. Garnish before serving.
