I make this before guests come over and I don't want to be bothered preparing a big meal. It is my never-fail very-safe go to. Everyone loves it!
In a large saucepan, heat oil and add onions. Cook until soft. Add garlic, beef, and sausage. Cook until meat is brown. Add tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, green pepper, beef broth, oregano, basil, bay leaves, salt, and pepper. Simmer until heated through. Remove bay leaves.
In separate bowl, stir together cottage cheese, dill, cheese, and salt, and pepper.
In a 9x13 pan, layer using this sequence:
- 2 cups of sauce
- layer of noodles
- 1/2 of the cottage cheese mixture
- layer of noodles
- 2 cups of sauce
- layer of noodles
- 1/2 of the cottage cheese mixture
- layer of noodles
- 2 cups of sauce
- 4 cups of grated mozzarella
Cover and bake at 375F for 1 hour. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes.*
*If I make this the night before and pop it on the oven the next day, I find it needs 1 hour and 30 minutes at 375F and then 15 minutes uncovered.
