From Martha Stewart Annual Recipes 2002. Making a sugar syrup (i.e., dissolving it over heat) makes a difference. This is a crowd pleaser that no one to date has disliked (I've made it repeatedly).
1) In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and 2 1/2 cups water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Remove from the heat; let cool.
2) In a punchbowl or large container, combined the lemon juice, sugar syrup, remaining 4 cups water, and ice. Stir well to combine. Thinly slice the remaining lemon, and add to the lemonade. Serve.
