Preheat the oven to 190 c / 375 f / gas mark 5 and lightly grease a 23cm / 9 inch cake tin.
Put the lentils and water in a saucepan and bring to the boil. Simmer until all the liquid is absorbed (10-15 minutes).
Heat the butter or oil and fry the onions until soft.
Mix all ingredients and press into baking tin.
Bake for approx. 30 mins. Allow to cool and cut into wedges.
