In a small bowl, combine warm water with yeast and 1/2 teaspoon sugar. Let sit for about 10-15 minutes to proof, or activate yeast.
Then in a large mixing bowl pour yeast mixture, water, flour shortening sugar and salt. Using an electric mixer, blend on low juntil all ingredients are incorporated, scraping down sides of bowl as needed. Mix for 7 minutes. Remove dough and place in a clean bowl. that has been greased lightly with oil or butter. Turn dough over in bowl. Cover the bowl with a damp clean cloth and place ina warm spot and allow dough to double in size (about 40 minutes). After dough rises, punch down to eliminate bubbles. Grease a glass loaf pan (this is important, a metal pan will produce a mettalic taste. In a warm spot let rise again until doubled in size (about 30-40 minutes)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake loaf for 30 minutes or until loaf sounds hollow when tapped lightly on top.
Note: for bread machine, add ingredients in order suggested in appliance manual. Bread can be made and baked in machine. Or machine can be used on dough cycle(instead of mixer) through the first rise; then bake dough in loaf pan in a conventional oven.
