Heat oven to 375 degrees. Cream well butter, sugar egg and almond extract. Stir dry ingredients together; blend in. Reserve a little less than half the dough. Roll rest between sheets of waxed paper into rectangle. Cut into 2 inch stripes. Cut through the waxed paper. Peal off one side of paper and flip dough onto ungreased cookie sheet. Roll remaining dough into ropes and place around the stripes and down the center. Bake 10 minutes or until edges are light brown. Cool. Put icing on cookie stripes. When dry, cut into 1 inch strips.
