Combo of Marias recipie (Westside Market) and Mark Bittman
In small saucepan over low heat,warm milk mixture , butter, vanilla, salt and sugar until butter melts. Cool a bit. Butter 4-6 small baking dishes, or 2.5 quart casserole dish 8x11 or 13x9 And fill with bread cubes. Once milk mixture is cooled, whisk in eggs, and pour over bread. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Let bread soak for 1+ hour. Can add raisins, peaches, apricots, cranberries, zest from 1 orange, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, or cardamom. Bake 30-45 min for baking cups or50 min if casserole dish, until the custard is set, but still a bit wobbly, and edges of bread are a bit browned. Can dust with confectioners sugar.
