Mix sugar, corn syrup, water, and salt into a heavy sauce pan string over low heat until sugar is dissolved. Boil until mixture reaches the softball stage of 238°. Remove from heat and blend it in maple flavoring and butter. Add walnut halves and stir gently until mixture becomes creamy. Turn out onto a sheet of waxed paper or aluminum foil and separate walnuts. Recipe makes about 1 pound of candy.
