Suggest a better descriptionAllow eggs to stand at room temp for 30 minutes. In mixing bowl combine egg whites, vanilla and cream of tartar. Beat with mixer on medium speed about 1 minute or till soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar one tablespoon at a time beating on high speed till stiff glossy peaks form (about 5 minutes) and sugar dissolves. (rub small amount between fingers it should feel smooth)
Immediately spread meringue over hot pie filling sealing at edges of pastry shell.
Bake as directed for pie (12 - 15 minutes at 350 degrees). Meringue should be lightly browned.
