Cream shortening and brown sugar.
Stir in egg and molasses and mix well.
Combine the flour, baking soda, salt, cloves, cinnamon, and ginger.
Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and mix well.
Cover and chill dough for 3 hrs.
Roll into balls the size of walnuts.
Roll in the granulated sugar.
Place 3" apart on greased cookie sheet or on parchment paper.
Bake for 10-12 minutes at 350F.
