Shepards pie as made by my mother
1) Clean, peel, and boil potatoes. (Make sure they are almost done before you begin to brown the meat.) Set your oven to the "warm" setting.
2) Brown the hamburger.
3) While browning the meat, steam or boil your vegetables. if they are frozen.
4) Chop the onion
5) Once the meat is done and the veggies are hot (If not canned), drain them.
6) Mix hamburger, onion, cream of mushroom soup and veggies in a large mixing bowl. Add milk as needed to make it creamy.
7) Drain and mash the boiled potatoes then mix with the butter, sour cream and milk as needed.
8) Spray a deep side 9x13 baking dish with cooking spray and fill with the meat and veggie mixture.
9) Add a thin layer of shredded cheese and then cover evenly to the top of the dish with mashed potatoes.
10) Bake at 325 degrees for 20 minutes and then broil for 5 minutes to brown the top of the potatoes.
11) Remove from the oven and add a thin layer of cheese and broil for 5 minutes to melt the cheese.
Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 to 10 minutes and serve with biscuits or bread.
