Dissolve soda in water. Combine soda mixture with sugar, shortening, and egg. Beat well until smooth. Stir in bananas. Add remaining ingredients; mix well. Spoon into a greased 9x5x3 inch loaf pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
I use my kitchenmaid and mix the flour in a the lowest speed to blend.
