Fry onion, mushrooms, and water chestnuts in 1/4 cup butter.
Cook remaining butter with flour, salt, pepper, milk, mushroom liquid, cheddar, soy sauce and tabasco to make cheese sauce.
Cook green beans until half done. Layer beans, sauce and onions twice. Bake 20 minutes at 350. Top with french fried onions and cook another 10 minutes.
