Suggest a better description1. Cook shallots, garlic, fennel, thyme, and red pepper flakes in oil in a large pot over medium-low heat until softened, 6 to 8 minutes, stirring occasionally.
2. Add wine, Pernod, tomatoes, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper and simmer briskly until liquid reduced by half, 4 to 5 minutes.
3. Add mussels and cook, covered, shaking occasionally, just until mussels are open wide, about 3 minutes (Discard any that remain unopened after 3 minutes).
4. Stir in basil and salt to taste. Serve with crusty french bread.
