Cook the bacon on medium low until crispy in an insulated soup pot. Remove bacon, then discard all but 1 tablespoon of drippings. Crumble bacon and add back into the pot. Add the onion and cook on medium low until onions are translucent. Add the clam juice from the clams, but reserve the clams for addition later. Add the diced potatoes and cover, stirring occasionally until tender or the clam juice is completely absorbed by the potatoes (about 10 minutes). Add milk, cream, soup, butter, kale and dill weed. Stir frequently for about 20 minutes, then add the clams and crab and simmer for ten more minutes.
This yields a thick chowder, so add more milk to achieve proper desired consistency. Half-and-half and 2-percent milk can be used to help hold down some of the calories and fat. I use fingerling potatoes as they are less starchy and have a little higher sugar content. Plus you don't have to peel them. Make sure to not add the clams until near the end to avoid them turning rubbery. The kale is optional, but the sweetness of the soup hides any kale flavor. It is like adding a multivitamin to your soup.
