Pour 1 1/4 cups boiling water over the oats. Cream shortening and sugar and add the eggs one at a time. Add Oatmeal and then the flour. Add dry ingredients. Add vanilla and mix. Pour into greased pan and bake at 35 minutes at 350 degrees.
Topping:
Mix all ingredients together. Add enough milk to make the topping spreadable. Spread on baked cake and brown under the broiler.
